MARINA

I met Marina

One June a couple years ago

At a party on a porch

With a mosquito torch

Thrown by my friend Margo

I never thought of it much

Until I needed to rhyme ballerina

It’s just a word to me

What else would it be

Marina

Can’t imagine what my wife would do

If I used another woman’s name in a song

I’d have to say

In a most professional way

That all the other names were wrong

I really needed a name

One that means promenade by the sea

It’s just a word to me

What else would it be

Marina

It doesn’t mean I want to see her

Though she’ll be single soon

And I must confess

That I remember the dress

She wore to that party in June

Still I needed a name

One that would rhyme with Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina

It’s just a word to me

Doesn’t mean a thing, you see

Marina
